Minimum Payment Warning

If you make only the minimum payment each period, you will pay more in interest and it will take you longer to pay off your balance. Below: that line, plus the two your statement leaves out.

Use $25,000 in my estimate

  1. 1Minimum payments: an illustrative 22% APR, a minimum of interest plus 1% of the balance, and no new charges.
  2. 2Consolidation loan: an illustrative 14% APR over 48 months (60 months above $30,000) with a 5% origination fee. Clear Financial does not offer consolidation loans.
  3. 3Settlement: the range runs from typical (creditors settle for 45 to 60% of the enrolled balance) to conservative (a 20% reduction), plus an illustrative fee of 20% of enrolled debt. Most programs run 24 to 48 months; the monthly deposit assumes 36. Your credit score will drop, creditors may still sue, and forgiven debt may be taxable.

Settlement is one tool. Here is how it stacks up against the other three, on the lines that matter.

Question What we doDebt settlement Consolidation loan Debt management plan Bankruptcy
What you repayThe full balance, plus interest and any loan feeThe full balance, usually at a lower interest rateDepends on the chapter; some debt is discharged
How longUsually 2 to 5 yearsUsually 3 to 5 yearsMonths for Chapter 7; 3 to 5 years for Chapter 13
Credit impactA hard inquiry; on-time payments can helpAccounts are usually closed; milder effectSevere, and long-lasting on your report
RisksNew debt if the cards fill up againMissing payments can end the planCourt process; some assets may be at risk
Who it fitsGood credit and steady income for a lower rateSteady income that can repay in fullDebt far beyond what you could ever repay

If you can repay in full within a few years, a debt management plan or a loan will usually cost you less credit damage than settlement. We will tell you that on the phone, too.

  1. 5Credit impact is general information, not a prediction for your file. How far a score drops depends on your history. For bankruptcy, talk to an attorney.

  • No bots: a real person picks up the phone.

Before you call

Who this is for, and who it isn't.

A two-minute read that can save you a wasted call. If we're not the answer, we'll say so.

Probably a good fit

  • About $7,500 or more in unsecured debt: credit cards, medical bills, personal loans.
  • A real hardship has made the minimum payments hard to keep up.
  • You can set aside one deposit a month in an account in your name.
  • You would rather pay less than the full balance and accept a credit drop to do it.
  • You run a business carrying MCA or other business debt.

Probably not a fit

  • Under about $7,500 in unsecured debt.
  • You can pay it all off within a few years.
  • Your debt is secured, like a mortgage or car loan. It isn't eligible.
  • You need a new loan. We don't make loans.

Straight answers

The questions people are afraid to ask.

Rather hear it from a person? 866-659-7966

Will my credit score drop?

Yes. Your credit score will drop during the program. If protecting your score matters more to you than lowering what you pay, a debt management plan or a loan may suit you better. The comparison above shows the trade.

Can a creditor sue me?

It can happen. Creditors may continue collection while your accounts are enrolled, and they can sue. If you receive court papers, call us right away at 866-659-7966.

Is forgiven debt taxed?

It may be. The IRS can treat forgiven debt as income, and a creditor may send you Form 1099-C. A tax professional can tell you how it applies to you.

What do you charge?

A fee applies, and every estimate shows it as its own line, in dollars. The estimates on this page use an illustrative fee of 20% of enrolled debt. We show you the exact fee before you decide anything.

Do you offer consolidation loans?

No. We don't make or sell consolidation loans. We negotiate what you owe. If a loan would serve you better, we'll tell you.

Which states do you serve?

We're enrolling clients in Florida, Georgia, Texas and California. Debt settlement isn't available in every state. If yours isn't on the list, free nonprofit credit counseling is a good place to start.

We also work with clients abroad who hold a US SSN or ITIN.
